What Is an AI Tool Decision Matrix?

A decision matrix is a simple way to make a choice more objective when several options each have different tradeoffs. You list your options, list the criteria that matter to you, weight how much each criterion matters, then rate every option against every criterion. The tool does the math and shows which option comes out on top for your specific priorities, not someone else’s.

The tool above is free, runs entirely in your browser, and doesn’t send your inputs anywhere. All ratings and weights are yours, this tool isn’t claiming to know how good any tool actually is, it’s helping you organize your own judgment.

    How the Score Is Calculated

For each option, every rating (1 to 5) is multiplied by that criterion’s weight (1 to 5), and the results are added together. A criterion weighted 5 that you rate an option 5 on contributes far more to the total than a criterion weighted 1. The option with the highest total score is highlighted as the winner.

How to Use This Free Decision Matrix

    1. Rename the 4 options to the tools you’re actually deciding between.
    2. Set a weight (1-5) for each criterion based on how much it matters to you.
    3. Rate every option (1-5) against each criterion, based on your own research or trial experience.
    4. Click “Calculate Scores” to see the ranked result.

Tips for a More Useful Decision Matrix

    • Only weight what genuinely matters. If every criterion is weighted 5, the matrix won’t discriminate between options, be honest about your real priorities.
    • Rate from experience when you can. A quick free trial of each option beats guessing at ratings from marketing pages.
    • Don’t treat the score as final. If the top two scores are close, that’s a signal the decision is genuinely close, not that the math is wrong.
    • Reuse this for non-AI decisions too. The same structure works for comparing vendors, apartments, or job offers.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is this decision matrix free to use?

Yes. It’s completely free, has no sign-up, and runs in your browser.

Where do the ratings come from?

You enter them yourself, based on your own research or hands-on trial of each tool. This tool organizes your judgment, it doesn’t supply its own opinions about specific products.

Can I change the criteria names?

The four criteria are fixed in this version (Price/Value, Ease of Use, Features/Capabilities, Support/Docs), but you can treat any of them as a stand-in for whatever matters most to you.

Can I compare more than 4 options?

This version supports 4 at a time. Run it again, keeping your top scorer as one of the 4, to narrow down a longer list.

What if two options end up with a very close score?

That usually means the decision is genuinely close for you. Consider a free trial of both before committing.
